A monodrama performed by Christina Podleska Polish translation by Christina Podleska and Anna Wołek.  Geraldine Aron’s play is a moving yet optimistic and funny story of a middle-aged woman whose life begins to crumble. Her husband has left her for a beautiful, young Mexican girl, her daughter moves out to live with her boyfriend and her mother cold and critical is unable to comfort her. Angela only has her dog and telephone left to fill the void in her life. She has a hard job ahead of her. She must once again become attractive and confident, search for happiness and find a reason for living. Her efforts to regain herself are so amusing and colorful that this modest one women show becomes a lively play inhabited by many characters.

Jola Skiba will be holding another Thai Massage Workshop this Saturday October 23rd from 14h till 16h30 and Sunday October 24th from 17h30 till 20h, at the EKOLA School of Wroclaw, ul. Zielińskiego 56 – Map here.

They have been working on a collection of dolls made out of papier mâché, salt dough and scraps of fabric.

A special stage will be placed at al. Śląska. There will be eateries along the street, a playground for children and WKS Śląsk Wrocław fan shop, where gadgets with a logo of the favorite club can be bought.

A multimedia presentation and exhibition container (the showroom) with an observation deck will be opened too. Inside the container in the main room, on a large outdoor screen visitors will be able to watch a multimedia display, showing in a nutshell which events will be organised at the Wrocław arena in the near future.

Open Day is scheduled for 10th October from 12.00 noon to 6.00 pm. Admission is free.

So what’s new in Wroclaw?
Well apparently lots of things.

First the Dalai Lama, honorary citizen of Wroclaw, is coming to our lovely city for a 2 day stay and will give a lecture, next wednesday (22/09) on Solidarity.  The Dalai Lama will give a talk on world solidarity and the role of Poland’s Solidarity Movement, in Hala Stulecia.

If you wish to learn more about the Solidarity Movement in Wroclaw in the 1980′s, don’t miss the exhibition “Solidarny Wroclaw” in remembrance of the 30th anniversary of the rising Solidarity movement.  It will be available for visitors for three months (until 27/11).  The exhibition is on pl. Powstańców Warszawy in Wroclaw.  Map here

Hala Stulecia, UNESCO world heritage since 2006, officially opened its new wing this week.  This Regional Center for Business Tourism is situated on the left side of the dome.  It’s a completely new business center.  More info here.  If you happen to walk around in that area, don’t miss the multimedia fountain, fantastic!  Info here.

The first stone of The National Music Forum has been laid and celebrated early September.  The new Auditorium will be completed by the end of 2012.  Once completed, it will be the most modern music centre in Poland, with a concert hall seating over 1800, three chamber halls, conference facilities, an exhibition space, a recording studio, a library and a bookshop.  It will be the seat of the Orchestra and Chorus of the Wrocław Philharmonic, the Leopoldinum Chamber Orchestra and the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra.

Jean-Michel Jarre will be performing in Hala Stulecia on Nov. 14th.  He already performed in Wroclaw in 2009, I guess he likes it here .  Tickets can be purchased on-line on the following sites: www.ticketpro.pl, www.metalopolis.pl, www.eventim.pl

The French book Club.  Lovers of the french language will be happy with this new initiative of the Alliance française in Wroclaw.  A first meeting was held this week to start the club, I should receive the info about exact date and time pretty soon.  You may already contact the Alliance française for more info: 72 341 02 80.

Lots of new things going on for kids and parents this year in Wroclaw.  Here are a few I have been informed about.

If you are a mum or a dad, looking to meet other people with kids, you should register on the very active Facebook Group Move to Wroclaw and look out for their weekly events “Coffee & Kids”.
The Move to Wroclaw Group shares general information, ideas and knowledge about the city of Wroclaw and also helps you make some new friends in the community. One of the social nights for example is the Polish Language evenings, usually every Friday, for those interested in practicing their polish language and also having a drink and meeting a few new friends.

The Wroclaw International Children’s House recently opened its doors and provides children from 2 to 6 years with high quality education.  This preschool is located in a green and quiet location and equipped with wooden and ecological toys. All classes are in English.  More info here .

Another pre-school inititative is located near Bielany.  The Mamczascafé organizes meetings and workshope for kids and parents.  The website is in polish for now, but the owner speaks fluent english and can organize events in english as well.   Use the contact form on the website to get in touch for more info.

And last but not least, a Thai Massage worskhop will be organized by Jola Skiba on Oct. 23rd from 14h till 17h.  Everyone is welcome, Jola speaks fluent english.  Contact her by email to register or to ask for more information, jola@masaztajski.info.

Check out the official website to find out how it works, where to get the card, how to recharge…  I must say that the website is a little confusing at first but basically, if I understood the whole process, these are the steps:

1.  Apply for the card and pick it up when ready, info here
2. Use it to encode your transportation ticket (one way, weekly, monthly..) , either via the vending machine or at the ticket sales’ point.  It is like an electronic tram/ bus ticket.  Lists of places to encode cards, that way
Payment in cash or credit card.
You can also buy them on-line but apparently you still need to stop by a sales point to activate your purchase.

So with such a new and modern system let’s hope the ticket controllers will start wearing uniforms!

Once this is well implemented, more and more services will be available using that card. For instance, it will be possible to pay with the URBANCARD in the city’s most popular attractions, such as the Zoo,  Aqua Park etc., and also in other public places, for example the car parks.

These events are the opportunity to meet and make new business contacts, exchange work experiences.
We are organising open networking opportunities amongst business people of Silesia and elsewhere. A casual opportunity to meet and connect outside your usual circle.
